Good Earth at Blood Run, is a National Historic Landmark, important cultural site, and a nature retreat. The name comes from the creeks that have red looking waters because of the red stone near the site. The site itself is one of the oldest sites of long-term human habitation in the U.S, and it's the largest site of the Oneota tradition. Oneota is a name used by archaeologists to refer to a cultural group that existed in the eastern plains and Great Lakes area of what is now the central United States from AD 900 to around 1750. It's a sacred place of importance to several Native American tribes including the Omaha and Ponca. This thriving gathering place and inhabitants of about 10,000 people were eventually forced out by the settlers and westward expansion that was already taking place across the land. Today, the state of South Dakota, along with the help of the Omaha, Ponca, Ioway, Sioux and other tribes, are making an effort to preserve this significant cultural site.
